Sossusvlei is another top destination in Namibia that attracts hundred of photographers from all over the world. It has red sand and striking dunes that have diverse shades of colors that interchangeably fade or deepen during the day.

These dunes keep changing color every passing hour from orange, pink and maroon, as well; the Tsaris Mountains display deep purples and blue colors. Sossusvlei is a haven for ostriches, Oryx and springboks that are seen now and again roaming in this area.

Sossuvlei located at an altitude of 570 meters (1,824 ft) beyond sea level; and some dune peaks project up to 960 meters (3,027 ft) beyond sea level.

Because of their crescent shape, Sossusvlei dunes are referred to as star dunes. Superlatively viewed from the sky, the multiple integrated crests that converge at the highest peak resulted from the back and forth shifting of sand that was caused by multi-directional strong winds. Blanket of sand called “smoking dunes” are formed by the winds that blow over the Vlei.

Special consideration should be given to the olden thorny camel trees adjacent to the dry river Tsauchab up to Vlei. The 4km tarred road accessible by two wheel drive vehicles stretches from Sossuvlei to an ideal area for parking and picnics and then disappears into the thick sand .The residual journey is accomplished by  4WD vehicle or footage.
