Days 3 & 4: Mowani Mountain Camp

Driven by private light aircraft to Mowani Mountain Camp – charter quoted separately. Mowani Mountain Camp, which is derived from the Swahili word M’wane “Place of God”, lies in an area of astounding stunning apearance in the middle of Damaraland between the Ugab and Huab rivers. Discreetly built high up within massive red granite boulders the lodge gives unsurpassed views over the vast immaculate wilderness with magnificent desert scenery, un common numbers of desert flora and fauna and fascinating geological formations and archaeological sites.

Mowani’s main complex, which is formed by a cluster of six thatched dome shaped structures, is very uncommon as the style of architecture echos the shape of the surrounding boulders. The sides of the bar, lounge and dining region have been left open thus giving the complex a cool feel also on the hottest day.

Accommodation is in twelve luxury East Africa-style safari tents built on raised wooden platforms hidden away within the boulders. A canvas-covered veranda at the way in of the tent enables guest to take pleasure in views of the rugged landscape. Bathroom facilities are made up of a shower, washbasin and w.c. Some of the tents have outside showers and the honeymoon tent has a beautiful outdoor bathroom which has been built around boulders, the view from the bath must rate as part of the best in Africa. The tents and public areas are all tastefully furnished with a mixture of carvings and artefacts from neighbouring African countries.
